If you’re looking for authentic Salvadoran food in Ottawa, La Cabaña is one of those places that instantly makes you feel at home the moment the food hits the table. We recently visited La Cabaña and made it our mission to try some of their most popular dishes — and it did not disappoint.
El Cabañazo: A Hearty Salvadoran Classic

We started with El Cabañazo, and honestly, this dish alone is worth the visit. It’s a generous plate that brings together everything you want in a comforting, traditional meal.
The steak was well seasoned and cooked just right, juicy and full of flavour. Alongside it came casamiento, the classic Salvadoran mix of rice and beans, which had that perfect balance of softness and richness. The chorizo added a smoky, slightly spicy kick that tied the whole dish together beautifully.
This is the kind of meal that leaves you satisfied without feeling rushed — simple ingredients done properly.
Pupusas: The Heart of Salvadoran Cuisine
No visit to a Salvadoran restaurant is complete without pupusas, and La Cabaña delivers them exactly as they should be.
We tried:
• Chicharrón pupusa
• Cheese pupusa
• Bean pupusa
• Mixed pupusa (chicharrón, cheese, and beans)

Each pupusa was thick, freshly made, and packed with flavour. The chicharrón filling was savoury and rich, the cheese perfectly melted, and the bean filling smooth and comforting. The mixed pupusa was easily our favourite — a little bit of everything in every bite.
Served hot and satisfying, these pupusas are clearly made with care and tradition in mind.
Dessert: Empanadas de Leche
To finish things off, we went for dessert and ordered the empanadas de leche. These sweet empanadas are filled with creamy, lightly sweetened heavy cream, and they were the perfect ending to the meal.

Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they struck that ideal balance between indulgent and comforting — not overly sweet, just right.
Final Thoughts
La Cabaña is a must-visit spot if you want to experience authentic Salvadoran food in Ottawa. From the filling El Cabañazo to the perfectly made pupusas and the delicious empanadas de leche, everything felt genuine, homemade, and full of flavour.
Whether you’re Salvadoran and missing a taste of home or just curious to explore new Latin American cuisine, La Cabaña is absolutely worth adding to your list.
